It has a long history as both a culinary and medicinal herb. It has many different uses. A number of different studies have found that the seeds were effective in lowering serum cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density proteins in humans. It is used in many different ways due to the chemical compounds found in its seeds such as alkaloids, lysine, L-tryptophan and steroidal saponins. Fenugreek seed is effective as a digestive aid, anti-inflammatory, mild antiseptic, and in lowering fever and blood sugar levels. It is also an excellent source of selenium, an anti-radiant which helps the body utilize oxygen. It can be found in capsule form in many health food stores. Measurement of glycosylated haemoglobin HbA1c ; is widely recommended as a means of monitoring glycaemic control.
